Kirjan takakannesta:
What happens when an expert in Roman jurisprudence and administration scrutinizes the Gospels and Acts? The Scripture text is illuminated and its ”basic historicity” is confirmed.
The author, after defining the power of the provincial governor and detailing the process of criminal juristiction, extensively discusses the trial of Jesus. Next he explains Paul's trial before Felix and Festus; his scrapes with the authorities in Philippi, Ephesus, and Corinth; and his trial in Rome. The author concludes with a chapter of the socio-economic background of the Galilean-oriented Gospels and one on Roman citizenship in Acts.
Concerning the Book of Acts, filled as it is with references to its Graeco-Roman environment, the author concludes: ”... any attempt to reject its basic historicity even in matters of detail must now appear absurd. Roman historians [unlike many New Testament scholars] have long taken it for granted.”
